Professional Experience

Have owned and operated James Luce Services offering arboricultural services since 1977. Services include commercial tree work, consulting and contract clmbing. Also contract teach arboriculture related courses Qualified lead instructor for chainsaw and technical felling, climbing Ddrt and SRT , work positioning and fall arrest, high angle response and emergency preparedness, tree biology, technical rigging and advanced technical rigging,pruning and Tree Dynamics and Integrated Risk Assessment and wildlife trees.

Retired in 2014 as Parks Arborist with 30 years at the City of Bellingham WA . Full spectrum of tree work in diverse settings ranging from arterial streets, parks to forests. Included several styles of climbing, aerial lifts, technical rigging, felling, removals, pruning, and planting. Estimated, plan, schedule and physically do all phases of the work. Do tree risk assessments, site evaluations and restoration planning. Includes report writing. Give training for staff. Do public outreach to promote arboriculture.

Perform aerial work other than tree work. Includes servicing sports field lighting, structural, electrical and plumbing repairs, wildlife monitoring cameras and canopy access for non climbers in a variety of settings.

Knowledgeable in ornamental plant ID as well as a strong NW native plants knowledge. Understanding of plant communities and ecosystems. Experience in design of native restorations as well as ornamental landscape.

Managed and supervised crews. Been responsible planning, budgeting, purchasing, hiring. Experience in many forms of communication including in diverse settings working with individuals, groups and public presentations. Experience with a variety of computer applications including GIS mapping.

Have operated a wide variety of equipment including backhoe, graders, loaders as well as the full range of tree care equipment. Have equipment maintenance and repair experience and skills.

Experienced rope splicer for many types of cordage. Worked with Samson ropes for photo shoots and technical advice on arborist products catalog in 2011.

Have performed underwater work on docks,piles and mooring systems.

Volunteer Activities

Do volunteer work for PNW ISA Chapter including public education. Have competed in PNW ISA climbing competitions. Active in climbing comps and as an organizer, event judge and technician. Enjoy recreational tree climbing and teaching climbing.

Work with Treekeepers a local non-profit tree advocacy group. Some activities include giving public tree talks, youth tree climbs, leading tree ID tours, climbing demonstration and community tree days including annual Arbor Day celebration. Active team member of Ascending the Giants team as well as board member. Recent projects include Forest Ecology tours at the Portland Audubon Society. Lead the team in operation of several days of canopy access to over 200 feet in the old growth Douglas Firs for 160 participants. In 2012 we did this for the ISA international Conference. In 2013 we did this for the National Audubon Society national conference.

Have taught tree care, tree ID and native plant ID classes for WA DNR Community Forestry Program. WSU Master Gardeners. Volunteer for Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association working on riparian restorations.

Involved in high canopy access work for research and education. Have guided mountain climbs, sea kayak tours and big tree climbs.
