Clogger, is a frontrunner in chainsaw safety and innovation in garment apparel. Clogger has created comprehensive guides and resources to assist users in understanding and addressing their inquiries.

Generally speaking, two headings can be used to apply to all chainsaw protective garments which can be purchased: European and North American.

  1. European: currently this is ISO 11393, published in 2018, which replaced EN381

  2. North American: currently this is ASTM F1897-20 (This relates to our Canadian Standards)

These standards outline the essential criteria for design and construction (Class), detail the protective coverage zones (Type/Design), specify the necessary performance testing (Test Method), describe the certification process (Standard), and provide information on labeling and marking requirements (TCS).

Clogger summarizes their research with a statement:

"There are very significant differences between chainsaw protection standards globally and the results obtained using one test method cannot be translated over to the other."

This means that not all chainsaw protection preforms the same. For example, meters per second cannot simply be converted to Feet Per Minute for the purposes of chainsaw protection comparison and equivalency.

Chainsaw protective gear is designed to minimize the risk of serious injuries. Before choosing a particular piece of clothing or deciding on a standard or regulation to follow.

It is essential to comprehend the research behind all relevant standards, testing procedures, and garment designs, and how they relate to function, performance and your overall safety as an operator.
