Michael Tain – Tree Industry and Logging Trauma Treatment (TILTT)

Michael (House) Tain, RN, BSN, CEN, TCRN is a United States Army and Marine Corps’ veteran who has worked for thirty-eight-years in the tree industry in a variety of positions for numerous companies and organizations throughout North America. These positions have included branch manager, choker setter, climbing arborist, splicer, feller, crew chief, operations manager, writer, contract climber, and instructor.

During this journey, due to the large number of accidents and injuries he was observing in the industry, he became certified as both a wilderness and street emergency medical technician; and fourteen years ago, returned to school to earn his nursing degree. He has since worked as an emergency department/trauma nurse at various locations in the United States and Middle East.

Presentation Description:

The tree and logging industries are ones in which many workplace injuries occur, typically in remote or challenging access locations. This combination of factors makes some degree of knowledge, education, and training in remote area trauma treatment imperative. This presentation introduces the three hazard/danger systems of the human body, the effects common tree/logging industry injuries have on these systems; and methods to quickly identify, treat, and stabilize these life-threatening injuries.

DJ is the son of Nancy and Dwayne Neustaeter, founders of Arboriculture Canada. DJ is passionate about the safety of operators in high-risk activities and working together as a team.

Presentation Description:

In an arborist emergency, a systematic approach is essential for a safe and successful rescue. This presentation unites the proven frameworks used by professional emergency responders with the unique considerations of climbing arborists and the hazards specific to tree-work incidents. It walks through each step of an organized response—from activating the Emergency Response Plan (ERP), to conducting a H.E.M.P.A scene assessment, establishing patient contact using the O.O.D.A loop, and performing primary surveys such as A.V.P.U, M.A.R.C.H, and R.B.S. Real-world scenarios—including pick-offs, ground-assisted rescues, spar-pole extractions, and complex canopy operations—are used to show how systematic methods turn chaotic situations into coordinated, confident action. With clear visuals and step-by-step strategies, this session highlights how preparation, situational awareness, and structured decision-making empower arborists to become effective and capable lifesavers.

Testimonials

I thoroughly enjoyed the Train the Trainer program. The information presented and the learning techniques were brought forward in a challenging, fun way. The course required us to step out of our comfort zone, but the rewards were fabulous. I would recommend this course for several reasons.

I learned about myself and the power of collective energy. I look forward to serving in this platoon but mostly I feel honored to have spent this past week with seven of the coolest trainers I've ever met.
